Ann Kingsolver

Professor of Anthropology

My career came full circle when I moved back to Kentucky to direct the Appalachian Center and Appalachian Studies Program at UK from 2011-2015. I grew up in Nicholas County, Kentucky, and listen to mostly rural residents around the world discussing globalization, livelihoods and identities. I am currently serving in a 2021-2025 term as Appalachian Studies Program Director, among other hats I wear around campus (including coordinating the BA/MA program in Anthropology).

Teaching

In the fall semester of 2024, I am teaching APP 700 Transdisciplinary Seminar in Appalachian Studies (the core course for our new graduate certificate in Appalachian Studies - open for enrollment independently or while in a UK graduate program), and ANT 160 Global Cultural Diversity (a UK Core course in global dynamics).

In the spring semester of 2025 I will be teaching ANT 310 Cross-Cultural Law and Justice (an elective for the new Law & Justice major) and ANT/APP 536 Global Appalachia (which will meet on Zoom 3-5:30PM on Mondays and is open to both undergrad and grad students).

In June 2025, I will be leading a study abroad program - Appalachia to Ireland - in which students will earn 3 credit hours for ANT 225 Culture, Environment and Global Issues at Maynooth University in Ireland. Research

Cultural anthropology’s strongest contribution is engaged listening, I think, and I learn from listening to stories (and silences) situated widely across social, national, political, disciplinary, identity and occupational borders.
